Human Rights in your country (66 respuestas)

How are the human rights in your country? Do you have freedom of speech, freedom of the press, property rights?

My country we do not have freedom of the press or speech. If they found that I posted here criticizing them, they would declare everyone in my IP range to be enemy of the state. We do not have much property rights either, as if you retaliate against an intruder, you are liable to being sued for damages against him.

Cool story.

We aren't as fucked as the US or UK that's for sure. There isn't a lot of problem with freedom of *speech* specifically here but the police is still fucked up when dealing with people.

All of the above. However when it comes to being able to defend your property it depends on the state. Many states in the Midwest and South have the Castle Doctrine where you can defend yourself against trespassers without any repercussions but the Northeast and the West Coast do not have these laws.

Please don't lump us in with the British, we actually have freedoms over here

Sounds like an excuse to be literally trigger-happy.

Yeah, just because there aren't security cameras around every corner doesn't mean the US don't have a serious surveillance problem.

Property is not a right.

Nothing is a right, really. It's only considered so if enough people agree. In other words, rights are decided through intersubjective consensus.

Rights in the US are formalized by law under the bill of rights though. We don't live under a consensus based system.

The bill of rights would not have come into fruition if the majority of people living under the jurisdiction didn't agree to those rights.

That was a one time deal though.

It wasn't a one time deal. The Bill of Rights will stand as long as we protect it against the government or a corporation or any organization or individual that would infringe upon it. "The tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants" and all that. As for what >>11 is saying, yes. The 10 amendments were written to serve as protection against the government after the creation of the Constitution and were written by the many of the same Founding Fathers who signed the Declaration of Independence. The citizens didn't vote in a referendum for the Constitution or the Bill of Rights, but their representatives did. The representatives were acting on behalf of their constituents so these documents are products of the general will.
